Among many barriers to health and wellness, individuals experiencing homelessness have limited access to vision care. VSP Vision™ recently partnered with the Homeless World Cup to provide free eye care and eyewear to participating athletes, who have all experienced homelessness within the last two years, and educate them about the importance of eye health. The 2023 Homeless World Cup was held from July 8 – 15 in Sacramento, California, where more than 500 athletes from 50 countries competed in the soccer tournament to help change their own lives and the world’s perception of homelessness.
With the support of volunteer doctors, 228 athletes and staff received free eye exams, including retinal screenings, and prescription glasses through VSP® Eyes of Hope®. More than 100 prescription glasses were made onboard the mobile clinic to dispense the same day, with the remainder to be completed by VSPOne. At the VSP Vision booth, event attendees had the opportunity to win eyewear donated by Nike and learn about sports vision from VSP network doctors.
To date, more than 3.8 million people in need have gained access to no-cost eye care and eyewear through VSP Eyes of Hope. To learn more about how to get involved with mobile clinics or other charitable opportunities, visit the Eyes of Hope page on the VSP Provider Hub.
