Blog > Optometric Journeys > Honoring a Legacy While Building My Own
If you asked me early in undergrad what I was going to do, optometry probably wouldn’t have been my answer. I initially explored other paths, but nothing quite felt right. Everything changed when I asked to shadow a family friend’s optometry practice.
What started as a single day turned into a summer job, and then another. Over time, I began to see that optometry provided a unique opportunity to build relationships and help people experience the world differently. Seeing how even small improvements in vision could impact someone’s day-to-day life made it clear that this was something I wanted to be a part of.
Reflecting on Optometry School Support from VSP Vision has played a big role in shaping my experience as both a student and a new graduate. Throughout optometry school, I saw how committed they are to investing in students like me—whether it’s through scholarships, networking events, or just showing up as a friendly face along the way.
I’m grateful to experience this support firsthand as a recipient of the 2026 Dr. Frank D. Fontana Memorial Scholarship. This recognition is especially meaningful because of its connection to Dr. Fontana’s legacy and his lasting impact on patients and the profession. Being associated with his name is something I don’t take lightly. When I found out I was selected, I was shocked and incredibly grateful; it made me reflect on the kind of doctor I want to become.
For me, this scholarship represents more than financial assistance—it’s also a reminder that I’m entering a profession invested in the next generation of optometrists. That’s something I’d encourage other students to take advantage of. You never really know what might come from it unless you apply.
I’m very appreciative of this recognition as I begin my career, and I’m excited to continue seeing VSP’s presence throughout my optometric journey.
Staying Rooted in Missouri As a new Doctor of Optometry, I’m returning to the same Missouri practice where I got my start, joining the doctors who mentored me early on. Staying in Missouri feels like the right decision. I’ve spent my life in this region, and it’s important to build my career here and invest in the community that has poured so much into me.
Right now, my focus is on learning, growing, and working to become the best optometrist I can be. As Eye See It, if my patients feel cared for and trust the care I provide, that’s the legacy I want to build.
