Blog > VSP Vision > Looking Beyond the “Medical vs. Vision” Debate
As optometrists, we know that patients rarely think about their eye health in terms of “medical” versus “vision” care. They simply want answers, quality care, and a seamless experience. Every day in our practices, routine eye exams uncover findings that go far beyond refractive error, identifying signs of serious health concerns that may otherwise go undetected. From signs of cancer and diabetes to vascular disease and neurological conditions, comprehensive eye exams can be a critical gateway to life-saving diagnoses.
That’s why the ongoing debate over medical and vision care often misses the bigger picture. The true value of our profession lies in our ability to deliver comprehensive care that supports both ocular and overall health. Managed vision care plays an important role in helping patients access routine exams, creating opportunities for earlier detection and intervention. These visits strengthen patient relationships, improve continuity of care, and reinforce the optometrist’s role as a primary healthcare provider.
From a practice perspective, this approach also creates long-term value. Patients who experience thorough, coordinated care are more likely to return, follow treatment recommendations, and remain loyal to the practice. By focusing on patient outcomes rather than benefit silos, we can elevate the profession, improve patient health, and continue building stronger, more sustainable practices that deliver value well beyond reimbursement.
As Eye See It, VSP has done an exceptional job at this by providing the tools and support for the coordination of benefits and offering essential medical eye care coverage. From training and education to online tools and resources, my practice has been able to leverage the value of these offerings to deliver a streamlined experience for our patients
