Some People Ease into Their Careers. I Jumped into the Fire.

Growing up, I saw optometrists as almost magical—the smartest people in the room, able to fix something as delicate and vital as vision. That image made the idea of becoming one feel intimidating, even unreachable. Everything changed when I met Dr. Burns. She treated my eyes for years and eventually became a mentor and colleague. Her belief in me lit a spark that’s been burning ever since.

Two years after graduating from Nova Southeastern University in 2023, I found myself at the threshold of ownership. A seasoned optometrist who had run his practice for over 20 years was ready to pass the torch—not just to anyone, but to someone who shared his values and vision for patient care. Despite my youth, he saw the fire in my eyes and handed me the keys. I was likely the youngest in my class to take on ownership—an opportunity born from preparation, persistence, and the right support.

Finding My Why
From the beginning, I knew private practice was my path. While many early-stage ODs hesitate, I leaned in—joining the Private Practice Club in my first year of optometry school, eventually becoming president, and serving on the executive board of the Student Optometric Leadership Network (SOLN). VSP played a key role in that journey, offering financial support and student-focused resources that helped us host events, attend conferences, and connect with private practice owners nationwide. Those experiences gave me the confidence to leap into ownership soon after earning my degree.

VSP’s support transitioned seamlessly from my student experience to my new role as a practice owner, becoming a foundational part of our growth. VSP Premier Edge helps bring in about 90% of our new patients through the VSP provider directory, while PECAA Max offers ongoing value through resources we rely on regularly and exam rebates that strengthen our revenue. Eyefinity’s EHR system keeps our clinical workflow efficient, Marchon provides a diverse eyewear portfolio, and VSP’s professional development opportunities continue to shape my growth as a leader. VSP reps stay actively involved, offering guidance and solutions that help our practice thrive—they’ve truly been a partner every step of the way.

I just graduated from VSP’s Future Leaders Academy, a nine-month program for early-stage optometrists who want to grow as leaders. It’s been transformative—covering everything from staffing and practice economics to advocacy and EHR systems—while pairing me with a mentor who provides clarity and confidence in navigating ownership. I highly recommend the Future Leaders Academy to recent graduates who feel a bit uncertain and want insight into private practice or just need that extra push forward.

Melbourne Eye: Lighting the Way Forward
My vision for Melbourne Eye is to modernize and expand—not just to grow, but to reflect the investment I’m making in myself as a clinician and leader. I want patients to feel that commitment in every part of their experience, from the technology we use to the way we communicate. I currently manage three exam lanes, but I see beyond them: a future with another doctor, a second location, and a practice that evolves alongside me. As Eye See It, private practice is my “why”—and with the right support, I’m building something magical.

Applications for the 2026 VSP Future Leaders Academy cohort are open through December 5, 2025.
