Job Readiness: Take These Steps to Take the Lead

Good luck” is best defined as “when preparedness meets opportunity.”
So, in your job search, put luck aside and, instead, put preparedness on your side.

Here are tips, tactics, and resources to help ensure you’ll be ready for the job opportunities that will come your way.

Get ready. Be ready. Let’s go!

Featured Article: Pre-Graduation Preparedness: Set Yourself Up for Success with Dr. Quy Nguyen

Graduation is around the corner—and for many 4th year OD students, so is the job search. If you’re getting ready to apply, interview, and step into your first professional role, these focused refinements can make a big difference.

Interview readiness (even without full-time experience)
You don’t need years of full‑time work to be a strong candidate. Employers look for skills, mindset, and potential—and you already have more experience than you think.

    • Remember all those events you went to? All those business cards and LinkedIn requests? Now is the time to turn to those contacts and let them know you’re looking for a role!
    • Translate clinical rotations, externships, internships, campus leadership, and part-time roles into real-world competencies. Leverage your four rotations to speak to your clinical competencies and expertise. Round out your clinical resume with any leadership experience or work experience you may have had during school.
    • Prepare short stories that show problem solving, teamwork, adaptability, and patient interaction. For example, a story about how you worked collaboratively in a team in a rotation to take care of patients from the moment they walked into the door, to when you finish their exam and hand them off to the office staff.
    • Practice confidently answering common interview questions like “Tell me about yourself” and “How do you handle challenging situations?”

Tip: Interviews are less about having the “perfect” answer and more about showing how you think, communicate, and learn.

Resume final polish before you apply “at scale”
Before sending out multiple applications, pause and make sure your resume is working for you—not against you.

    • Focus on clarity, readability, and strong action verbs
    • Highlight outcomes and responsibilities—not just titles
    • Tailor your resume slightly for the roles you’re applying to, even when applying broadly.  So, if you are applying for an ocular disease (or VT) position, you may want to highlight those experiences more.
    • Doublecheck formatting, consistency, and accuracy

Tip: A clean, well‑organized resume signals professionalism and attention to detail—qualities employers notice immediately.

Presenting yourself confidently as a new graduate
Confidence doesn’t mean having all the answers—it means trusting the foundation you’ve built.

    • Be ready to speak clearly about your interests, strengths, and career goals, including if you want to buy into a practice in the future
    • Show curiosity and openness to learning rather than perfection. Look up the employer, their bios, their interests, etc., before you show up to the interview.
    • Maintain professional presence in interviews: dress code, arriving on time, thoughtful responses, eye contact, and genuine engagement. Pro-tip: it doesn’t hurt to get there a few minutes early—but not too early—and engage with the office staff! Who knows if they’ll play a role in the hiring decision.
    • Remember—interviews are a two-way street. They’re seeing if you are the person for the role, just as you are assessing if they are the practice/employer for you. Framing these interviews as a normal process for both sides to assess each other takes some of that pressure off.

Tip: Employers expect new graduates to grow into the role. What stands out is self‑awareness, coachability, and enthusiasm.

When you bring preparedness into your job search, you’ll tame any feelings of overwhelm or uncertainty. Be persistent and stay confident. And remember that many new grads land their jobs through active networking and direct outreach to hiring clinics. Of course, take advantage of resources at VSP® Careers in Eyecare to explore various career options in all practice modalities.

Propel Your Career with C.A.R.E.

Hiring practices are looking for new ODs who can bring immediate value to their offices. Likewise, new ODs are seeking job roles where they can best apply their fresh skills and insight while also demonstrating a foresight into elevating the practice—and often with an eye on operating their own practice in the future. Here’s how the PECAA C.A.R.E. framework can bring it all together.

  • Click for more.

Show that you bring C.A.R.E. to your job role by understanding and applying these principles of the framework:

    • Contributions: You actively offer your ideas to make the business better, enhance service quality, and elevate patient experience.
    • Accountability: You take ownership for your skillset and results while faithfully acknowledging your opportunities to improve, for your benefit and for the practice, too.
    • Relationships: You consistently give extra effort to connect with patients and genuinely understand their wants, needs, and hesitations.
    • Entrepreneurial Mindset: You show a real interest in how the practice runs while taking initiative to research and suggest quantifiable improvements. (And this is where you’re discovering what matters most to someday operate your own practice.)

Now see the C.A.R.E. framework in action. Read how Doctor Santrell Hart-Moreland, OD, a Georgia-based optometrist who leads three locations, has applied the principles to launch her into private practice and how it guides her in selecting ODs to operate and grow her business.

job fair

It’s On! Jump Into Job Fair Season

Job fairs are one of the best tools in your job search toolbox. They’re so much more than “swag in a bag”; they’re your venue to make real contact with job recruiters and gather information about job opportunities. Here’s your readiness checklist to get the most from every job fair you’ll attend.

  • Click for more.

Maximizing the Power of In-Person – Job listings tell you about position requirements, but recruiters at a fair tell you the real-world specifics.

    • Determine the recruiters’ needs and motivations to hire for open positions.
    • Check the professional style and preparedness of the representatives at the booth; how well they attract and engage talent to fill the open job opportunities.
    • Ask deeper questions about a job setting such as, “What does a typical Tuesday look like?” or “What are the most immediate challenges or goals at the practice?”

Connecting for Keeps – Go beyond a collection of business cards and general “Apply Online” portals. Make it personal.

    • Always get the recruiters’ names at a booth and ask about their roles within the setting (and, yes, collect business cards if they have them).
    • Ask them how and when they began working with the practice or setting. Listen for cues about how they successfully gained their role and how they became recruiters for the business.
    • Ask to connect for follow-up conversation. “Could I connect with you on LinkedIn or another way so we can keep in touch?”

Get Their Pulse for Your Pitch – Here’s where you find out if what you emphasize about yourself excites them about potentially hiring you.

    • Pay attention to the items on your resume/CV they immediately inquired about and what questions they asked. These might be your highest value points.
    • Listen for top needs, wants, or opportunities in what they’re looking for in a candidate (versus what you might have initially pitched about yourself). Clarify quickly if you believe you can fit the bill for what they’re looking for.
    • Offer your contact information to them and be sure to follow up directly afterward to keep the connection alive.

Courting Competitive Offers – When you have the “right stuff” for more than one recruiter, let that be part of your negotiation for who will land you in their job.

    • Let them know your needs in a role and whether you have other prospects that can fill those. “I understand X-practice offers a growth track. Do you offer that as well?”
    • Clarify when they expect to hire and politely share if you have other offers already. You might motivate a practice to move quickly to bring you on board.
    • Ask about the additional benefits and working conditions and how they feel theirs are differentiated from another hiring practice.

For every recruiter encounter you have—across different job fairs and even from booth to booth at a single event—be sure to refine your pitch, your presentation, and your expectations. Shoot for the moon, but even if you don’t land there, you’re still among the stars. Good luck!
